This Week’s Fun & Fancy Word: Ultracrepidarian!

ultracrepidarian

This Week’s Fun & Fancy Word Is:

It’s a first cousin to the word “mansplaining” we hear so often these days. But an ultracrepidarian isn’t limited to condescending dudes who disregard a woman’s expertise. They’re anyone who pontificates on subjects beyond their area of knowledge. In other words, an ultracrepidarian is someone who spouts off about things they know absolutely nothing about.

Etymology:
Origin Of The Word Ultracrepidarian

Like a lot of words in English, ultracrepidarian originates from Latin. It combines ultra (beyond) and crepida (a sandal or shoe). What do shoes have to do with expounding on subjects you know nothing about?

Its roots lie in an anecdote attributed to the Roman writer Pliny the Elder. As the story, goes a shoemaker criticized the Greek painter Apelles’ (360–315 BC) depiction of a sandal.

After Apelles corrected the misshapen sandal, the cobbler began criticizing other aspects of the painting as if he had suddenly developed the skills to become an art critic. Apelles is said to clap back by retorting, “let the cobbler not judge above the sandal.”[1]
